- In many ways. The main reason that an internal *can* be more flexible
- is system bandwidth. An internal can use the system bus to communicate
- with the host system, indeed the modem can even be a bus master and
- do much of the work for itself.
-
- Examples: the CL PhoneBlaster and the IBM Multimedia Modem (with the
- associated ThinkPads and Aptiva Magic series). I'm not too familiar with
- the PhoneBlaster, but I believe it's a modem and sound card ploped onto
- the same FR4 (please correct me if I'm wrong). I have the IBM MModem and
- it takes advantage of the bandwidth to system memory in a way that no
- serial port attached modem could dream of.
-
- Flexability? How about, software upgradability (no I'm not talking flash, but
- diskettes). It also allows the modem to reconfigure itself based on the
- modem at the other end. If the other modem isn't playing nice the internal
- modem can load code to match the other end.
-
- Oh, and as long as you've paid the $$ for a modem why not have it be your
- sound card, midi synth, mpeg decoder, etc. in one ISA slot. It also allows
- the host CPU access to the data inside the communications stack.
-
- There are lots of advantages that can be had with internal modems. There
- are disadvantages too, and I don't mean the blinkin' lights. They can be
- done very well throught the GUI, and hidden when not of interest. The
- biggest drawbacks of internals modem is lack of creativity of the designers
- and the limited hardware and operating system supported.
